Apogee Electronics is a leading manufacturer of digital audio hardware systems and related accessories for audio professionals and musicians around the world. Apogee was founded in 1985 and initially made its name designing filters that solved many of the early problems associated with digital audio. Later, Apogee’s complete conversion systems pushed the envelope of digital audio quality and established Apogee as a key innovator in the field of professional digital audio. Today, Apogee converters and audio interfaces are regarded as the reference standard in the audio industry. Products such as the Rosetta Series and X-Series converters, Big Ben, Ensemble, Duet and the Symphony System all have become the benchmark by which digital audio conversion is judged. Apogee and Vintage King have worked together in bringing clients the best possible gear at competitive rates, including the special Symphony System Bundle currently featured through Vintage King.
The Rosetta 800 takes two of Apogee’s most celebrated products and the latest in high-definition digital audio and combines them into one impressive package. The ROSETTA 800 gives you eight channels of superior AD/DA conversion at sample rates of up to 192k, Apogee´s “SoftLimit”, “UV22HR”, and our advanced “Intelliclock”. The result is a premium digital recording solution that is built for the professional recording facility yet economical enough for the project studio.
Legendary Apogee Conversion in High-Definition
The most crucial process in the digital recording environment is high-quality analog to digital conversion and the most trusted and desirable converters are made by Apogee. With up to 96k standard and optional 192k sample rates, the ROSETTA 800 combines Apogee’s legendary conversion quality with flexibility that complements any digital audio workstation.

Go Native with the X-FireWire expansion card
For users of Logic, Nuendo or any of the many native DAW’s the X-FireWire expansion card provides an extremely low latency connection that supports FireWire S400 and S800 standards. And, if you are buying multiple units, you can daisy chain up to a whopping 120 channels with incredibly low latency.
Intelliclock: Dual Stage Jitter Reduction
Another essential for outstanding digital recording is maintaining an ultra-low-jitter, clock signal. To accomplish this, ROSETTA 800 utilizes Apogee’s Intelliclock. Intelliclock is really two clocks in one. A fast-responding ´read´ clock, with a wide locking range, fills a dedicated FIFO buffer, while an ultra-low-jitter ´write´ clock writes the data out of the buffer, and is used to clock the converters.
SoftLimit: Maximize Levels, Minimize Overs
One of the greatest difficulties in digital recording is getting an adequate level without clipping and unwanted distortion. With Apogee’s SoftLimit, you can maximize digital output levels without overs.
UV22HR: Dither Down with 24-bit Detail
UV22HR is Apogee´s industry standard technology for reducing the word-length of a high-resolution digital signal to 16 bits for the Internet and CD mastering. UV22HR is also being employed to produce dramatically improved Internet and computer audio content without increased file sizes or data rates.
The Apogee AD-16X and the DA-16X , Apogee’s latest and most advanced conversion systems, take the legendary quality of Apogee a huge step forward. Features such as a redesigned power supply, standard 192kHz sampling rates, the C777 clocking technology found in Big Ben, and optional Pro Tools HD and FireWire expansion cards, make the AD & DA-16X the most powerful and flexible conversion combination ever. And, not only does the X-Series hardware offer unequaled, groundbreaking technology but it makes it available at a fraction of the cost associated with previous, premium Apogee gear.
Advanced High-Definition Conversion
The most critical component in the digital recording environment is proper, high-quality conversion and since the dawn of digital recording the most desired converters have been made by Apogee. And, if you are buying multiple units, you can daisy chain up to a whopping 120 channels with incredibly low latency.
SoftLimit: Maximize Levels, Minimize Overs
One of the greatest difficulties in digital recording is getting an adequate level without clipping and unwanted distortion. Soft Limit is an analog peak limiter that enables the capture of an additional 4-6 dB of level without going into an ‘over’ condition. Short of purchasing a very expensive stand-alone compressor/limiter, there is currently no product on the market that handles this process better than SoftLimit.
UV22HR: Dither Down with 24-bit Detail
UV22HR is Apogee´s industry standard technology for reducing the word-length of a high-resolution digital signal to 16 bits for the CD mastering. UV22HR is also being employed to produce dramatically improved internet and computer audio content without increased file sizes or data rates. It is estimated that 8 out of 10 hit records are mastered using Apogee’s UV22HR technology.
High Performance Output
The DA-16X uses Apogee’s newly developed electronically balanced line drivers. Originally designed for the Mini-DAC, these line drivers are able to simulate true transformer behavior. The circuitry is an ultra low output impedance, high current driver, capable of running levels up to 26 dBu to the most complex or low impedance loads. Recording studios utilizing vintage audio-equipment will find this particularly valuable. Ultimately, the output performance of the DA-16X achieves perfect symmetry when used in balanced mode (even with an unsymmetrical load) and no increased distortion when used unbalanced.

It's About Time...
For years audio professionals have been requesting that Apogee make their legendary clocking technology available in a stand-alone master clock. We have responded not only by making it available but by making it revolutionary. Apogee’s BIG BEN is already astonishing users with its ability to bring amazing clarity and quality to audio production while providing flexibility and features like no other studio clock before.
A Cure for the Jitters – Apogee’s new “C777” Clock
At the heart of any word clock regeneration is a phase lock loop (PLL). The PLL is a combination of analog and digital elements without the ability to dynamically adapt to the nature of the external clocks. In other words, the better the clock performance, the less flexibility it has. And conversely, the more flexibility there is in a PLL, the less effective it is at jitter reduction. Apogee’s new C777 is built to address these inadequacies. The C777 utilizes an entirely digital process that Apogee has developed using the most advanced Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) technology available along with DSP based digital filtering. The result is the most aggressive jitter reduction ever. With the flexibility and stability provided the C777, Big Ben is able to re-clock devices with excessive jitter and function as if it were the master clock. The ultimate in flexibility combined with unprecedented levels of performance make the C777 unequaled in the world of clocking.
Added Flexibility with Format Conversion
Not that you would expect it from a master clock, BIG BEN gives you the option of real-time format conversion. Use BIG BEN’s intuitive digital display to go from S/PDIF to AES, AES to ADAT, ADAT to S/PDIF, etc.
X-Video Expansion Card for Video-Sync Generation
The multi-standard X-Video card will allow BIG BEN to function as a master video sync generator, outputting a composite video black-burst (including color burst for PAL and NTSC color). When functioning as a master video sync generator BIG BEN can perform as a clock slave to the video-board and generate digital audio clocks based on the video standard selected. Alternatively, the X-Video card can function as a Slave video sync generator. In this mode the output video will be a regeneration of the input video. The X-Video card will maintain the color-phase and field information through “Genlocking”, while simultaneously stripping the original signal from its pixel information.
“Adaptive Loop Filtering” (ALF)
ALF maximizes BIG BEN’s clocking ability with an intelligent low pass filter. Because the C777 has made all incoming signals into data (1’s and 0’s) BIG BEN is able to dynamically compensate for excessive jitter and even improve already acceptable clock signals to levels unattainable until now. No matter what your input looks like, ALF can adapt and overcome all obstacles to create a stable, reliable, low jitter clock source.
“SureLock”... Your Drop out Defense
So, BIG BEN is masterfully handling external clock signals and all of their anomalies and you’ve got your jitters under control. What if BIG BEN encounters the ultimate disturbance in clocking, a dropped signal? Not to worry, with “SureLock” BIG BEN will compensate by remaining locked on the last relevant frequency sent by the delinquent device. When the signal resumes, BIG BEN will gradually, and smoothly re-synchronize without interruption.
Termination Issues... A Thing of the Past
Very often in an elaborate audio chain word clock signals are improperly terminated. BIG BEN will chime in with a visual indication of over or under termination on it’s digital display for each word clock output, allowing you to troubleshoot more quickly and get back to business.
8-channel D/A card plugs into expansion slot and allow for digital attenuation/gain control of individual channels, D/A Auto Calibration; Overdub Mode (Confidence Monitoring); DB25 connector.
