The Neve 1073 is justifiably legendary for its beautiful and unique sound, as demonstrated by its use in so many high-end studios, on so many famous recordings. The history of the 1073 goes back forty years, to May of 1970, when one era ended and another began. On May 8, the Beatles released their final album, Let It Be, and two days later, Rupert Neve released the original 1073 microphone pre-amplifier with EQ. It remains the most desirable Class A discrete transistor mic pre to this day.

Neve 33314a Compressor/Limiter Pair (used)

Rare tube compressor/limiter that adds a thick texture and euphoric halo around any signal passing through it. These are labor intensive units to restore, but our tech staff performs this work beautifully. Premium VK serviced-recapped with 1 year warranty. Introduced in 1961, the 175 is similar to its cousin the Urei 1176; the Input control sets the threshold while Output sets the output gain. The compression is at a fixed ratio of 12:1. The meter can be switched to view Input, Output, or Gain Reduction (GR). Both Input and Output gain controls are stepped at intervals of 2dB, but finer controls within these increments are obtained by using the “Vernier” controls. Adjustable attack time from 100 to 1000 ms; adjustable release from 27 to 527 ms. Similar to the 1176, both switches are set at their fastest in the clockwise position, and the compression circuit can be clicked off using the attack knob. There are also “Double Tip” Input and Output jacks; the original cables for these had two 1/4” jacks at both ends of the cable. These can be bypassed by using the included XLR pigtails.

Optical solid state version of the classic LA2A, with discrete circuitry and balanced ins and outs. Adjustable input gain and threshold. Includes xlr pigtails. Premium VK serviced. Recapped, with 1 year warranty. Excellent for vocals, guitars, and mix buss. Great mid-range presence that engineers love. Can be very invisible, or more pronounced, due to continuously variable rotary controls. 'Peak Reduction' increases the sidechain gain - lowering the threshold and increasing compression - while 'Gain' is used to adjust the makeup gain.

Neve 1066 Vintage King Audio Racked Pair (used)

Vintage selectable-frequency, non-overlapping 3 band EQ with hi/lo pass filters. Purists say this is the best sounding API module ever made, due to its simple amplifier design. It has a more direct signal path, using two API 2520 op-amps instead of the three used in a 550a.

Classic white VU 160's. Amazing on kick, snare, bass guitars, with just the right attack/release. Just tap the kick/snare with it before going to ProTools, to get some tape compression feel. Might be the best bass comp on the planet, and it's surprisingly good on vocals. The dbx 160 is a Voltage Controlled Amplifier compressor that uses a transformerless, solid-state design that has endured for decades. The program-dependent compression, combined with multiple gain stage components, creates a sound that is uniquely its own. The controls are simple: Threshold (with lights indicating above and below threshold value); Compression ratio from 1:1 to Infinity:1; Output Gain from -20 to +20 db attenuation; and three meter settings for input, output, and gain change. Servicing of the dbx 160 VU The dbx 160 VU compressor is a perennial favorite among recording engineers for its classic soft knee/smooth compression sound and ease of operation. First introduced in 1976, many of these units are still around, but due to their age they usually need some work done to make them sound their best. At Vintage King, our technicians are expert at the repair and restoration of these compressors. Unlike a unit that you might be tempted to buy from an auction site, our 160 VU’s have been thoroughly cleaned, repaired and tested by a professional technician. A typical dbx 160 VU goes through the following stages before it is shipped to our customers: <ul><li>Pre-test, to check for any obvious problems</li><li>Cleaning and tightening of all switches and Molex pins</li><li>Cleaning of all potentiometers</li><li>Cleaning of all exterior panels</li><li>Replacing all electrolytic and tantalum capacitors (“re-capping”)</li><li>Repairing any broken solder joints</li><li>Ultrasonic cleaning of all removable knobs and switches </li><li>Replacing all VU meter bulbs</li><li>Troubleshooting with an initial post-testing</li><li>Aligning and testing the unit according to dbx-specified procedures</li><li>Calibrating all gain reduction, output levels, and metering </li><li>Final testing for harmonic distortion, noise floor and frequency response</li></ul> If required, the following procedures are also performed on the dbx 160: <ul><li>Replacing the original brown lamp cord with a new power cord</li><li>Re-painting the black metal sides and rack ears</li><li>Removing faceplate for cleaning, stripping and re-applying a clear coat</li><li>Replacing the metallic knob and switch covers</li><li>Repairing or replacing any faulty parts or connections</li></ul> Each dbx 160 requires approximately four hours of tech work, at a minimum, in order for it to be restored and repaired to the Vintage King standard. Occasionally some pieces require even more extensive restoration work. Helios 70s 4-Band EQ/Pre Racked Pair (used)

Its tone makes it highly desirable, but that desirability also makes a vintage 1073 a rare commodity. In the search for that elusive tone, one alternative is to modify a Neve 2074 module to act as a 1073. The Neve 2074 is a line in/EQ only version of the 1073, with the only difference being that the 2074 has no capability for microphone input. But all of the EQ settings are the same on both modules. Thus, by adding the microphone section components, a 2074 can be converted into a 1073. To accomplish this conversion, our Vintage King technicians start with a new ELMA input attenuator, wired with metal-film resistors. ELMA is the original manufacturer of these components for Neve, and they remain the industry standard today, used by a wide variety of companies. In addition to the new attenuator, a new Carnhill input transformer is added. Carnhill is the current manufacturer for these Neve components, and they are made to the original spec for 1073 modules. These same transformers are used by Neve and BAE to make their versions of the 1073. In the conversion process, all the circuit cards remain original; any wiring that needs to be added is accomplished with original Neve wire whenever possible. New metal-film resistors are added to the interior of the card edge connector, and a new Hi/Lo impedance switch is added on the back of the module. Finally, the faceplate is rescreened in order to match the original lettering of a 1073. Although the process is labor intensive, the result is well worth it - a mic pre/EQ module that is for all intents and purposes, a Neve 1073, the most legendary and sought-after mic pre/EQ in the audio industry. Rest assured that a converted 2074 from the Vintage King Tech Shop will be built to the highest technical standards, and will provide you with years of trouble-free use and excellent sound quality.
