The Wunder Audio CM7 Fet Microphone
A phantom powered version of the original U47 was released in 1969 known as the U47 Fet. The circuit was quite desirable, using transistors creating a very robust sound. The Fet mic has since obtained a legendary status being the most preferred mic in obtaining larger-than-life Kick and Bass tracks as well as thick and full vocals. The U47 Fet is now becoming as sought after as the U47.
“The R & D for the CM7 FET relied on studying the original U47 closely,” says Wunder Audio’s Mike Castoro. “Employing the exact replica of the original grille is one of the key aspects of achieving the correct performance. We’ve been BETA testing this mic for a year now and are very happy with the progress and end result.”
The Wunder Audio CM7 Fet Microphone comes with a new K47 dual membrane capsule, wooden microphone box, historic shock mount and 1-year warranty.

What makes Wunder CM7 sound so good?
The original M7 capsule "the Berlin M7" is actually very different from the Gefell M7, which is machined differently, especially at the isolator rims. The Berlin M7 was only used in U47, M49 mics, and the CMV3a, the so-called Hitler mic.
We purchased 150 U47's over a six-year period as a vintage mic dealer. We became heavily into collecting them for recordings and held back 8 or 9 of the best sounding examples. Being very familiar with the changes over the years, we noticed that the M7 capsule was better than the K47 capsule.
The M7 capsule is a piece of art in itself. It is the only 1" large diaphragm capsule ever made with a diaphragm that is glued on with precise tension, similar to the way a snare head is stretched on a rim. The contact point is where the diaphragm is only touching a very thin rim. This rim is precision milled into a flat piece of brass, which contains 90 holes per side, located with exact precision, and then super polished "lapped" for smoothness.
The diaphragm is made of a Mylar substrate that has the original thickness of 6 microns and placed in a vacuum chamber where a 250 angstroms (1/40th micron) layer of gold is evaporated onto its surface in a 1" circular pattern. The gold becomes a conductive surface on the Mylar on which a voltage can be applied, creating one of the plates of a capacitor. On our M7 capsule, these diaphragms are stretched to a specified tension with a 9oz. tensioning weight and glued to a ring by the original Neumann capsule expert in Germany.
All other capsules use a flat washer shaped spacer to determine the space between the diaphragm and the backplane thus saving machining cost. Finally a bezel is screwed down over the whole assembly to hold it in place. This is the brass or plastic ring with all the screws we all see on all other large diaphragm capsules. This O-ring spacer is very wide compared to the thin rim of the M7, which ultimately dampens the sound.
M7 is much harder to manufacture because of these reasons but it is worth it. We actually offer different biases of the M7, one that's higher end biased and one that's more low end. 17/10000 of an inch is the normal distance from the diaphragm to the back plate. If it's 15/10000 there's a variance, as there is at 19/10000. Depth of the back plate and the tension of the skin all play a huge role in the sound of the capsule.
It is the capsule, transformer and tube, in that order that is responsible for the sound of the U47. The most unique thing we're doing is a remake of the very earliest U47 transformer that came out between 1949 and 1952. During these first three years of of production the mic had the larger transformer with 25 percent wider windings. This, plus the earlier Mu-Metal made the transformer saturate nicer than the later smaller U47 transformer. When you get close to the mic, the higher vocal level plus proximity effect causes saturation to take place. One really needs to sing close to the grille because the way it handles pressure-gradient proximity effect is the key to the U47.
The Grille of the U47 is very unique in the way it allows a 1.5 db boost at 5k to take place with astonishing presence and then cuts 8K about 1dB to take the sibilance away. Then there is a 1 dB bump at 10 k, then rolling off at 11k. This natural EQ is unbeatable. This unique grille has a fine gauge mesh wire sandwiched between an inner and outer heavy gauge grille wire. We use the identical grille setup as the original U47. If the grille were changed to something simpler the frequency response would be much flatter and polite sounding taking away its cutting edge. The exact shape of the grille is also critical to achieve the proper resonances. The grille and the hand built M7 is the beauty of the design.
The transformer is specially manufactured in the US for us by an ex-Telefunken Germany engineer. These are wound the old way on vintage machines. Large transformer U47s are sought after sonically and achieve a little more saturation and low end. German IRT broadcasters asked George Neumann in the early 1950's to make the U47 with less bottom end for Radio Broadcast specifications, so Neumann changed the transformer. Subsequently they made the body shorter by 7/10 inch.
The Tube is an EF14. We can also use a VF14 at a higher price point but it is not worth it. Basically, the VF14 and EF14 are tooled identically inside. Telefunken made some of the Stahlroehren (Steel Valves) before WWII; these are the less desirable versions. Telefunken moved the tube manufacturing to West Berlin. There is a difference between prewar (and later east German) and postwar tubes. The prewar tubes have a bulky ring around the Bakelite base; the postwar tubes are more streamlined.
The VF14 is a dinosaur, it's extinct. The EF14 is the savior of the mic. The only difference between the VF and EF is the filament voltage requirement, but they sound the same if set up correctly for a U47. These tubes have the same interior tooling; the only difference is how the filament wire is attached.
The VF14 is under heated. If you use an EF14 and run a separate filament at 4.95 volts, the EF14 acts identical to the VF14. We add a capacitor and resistor on the back of the tube socket called a "dummy load" to make the EF14 behave like a VF14. Without that, the EF14 will not perform properly.
We don't use PVC, which was used extensively in the U47 in the diaphragm; the point-to-point hookup wires within the mic and more critically, the insulating wires that come out of the transformer were sheathed in PVC. That's the "Achilles Heel" of the transformer. As these wires deteriorate, there can be a loss of high end or low end. The biggest culprit was the PVC, which is constantly deterioration and cracking. Every year with the change of seasons the PVC will expand and then shrink and bubble up and crack. A quick test for a capsule is to make a breath like you're fogging up a window, and if you hear a rush of white noise, that means the capsule's shot. PVC, Poly Vinyl Chloride was invented in 1912. It hardens and has a relatively short shelf life. Neumann knew this as early as the 1950s, that's why he eventually changed the skin of the capsule in the U47 from PVC to Mylar. As the PVC hardens, it becomes less pliable.
We also use very smooth high-end Metalized Polypropylene capacitors that weren't available back then as filtering and corner frequency caps i.e. low frequency cap. We doubled the value of the corner frequency cap that enables more low end to come through. The caps Neumann used had a tendency to dry or crack over the years. They also used a ceramic capacitor that would crumble in the old U47's.
The power supply has nothing to do with the circuit at all; it should only supply the tube with the proper voltage. The problem with the old Neumann NG supply is that there was no voltage regulator, so it was unstable. The voltage for the tube should be exactly 105 VDC. I have discovered old PUS's yielding as low as 50 VDC and as high as 160 VDC, which can irreparably damage the tube. Also the 50-year-old cable from the mic to the PSU should be discarded, as it will be crumbling due to the PVC insulation.

The
Wunder Audio CM7-GT (Glass Tube)
uses a NOS Telefunken glass tube, which replaced the VF14/EF14 in 1960-1979. The CM7-GT has 9 patterns selectable from the PSU. The CM7-GT Circuit is basically the same as the CM7 with extra circuitry added to achieve the remote pattern changing. The CM7-GT use a PCB. The critical high impedance parts are assembled point to point. It also uses the same custom wound "large style" Neumann U47 transformer that we use in the CM7. The CM7-GT uses the identical grille setup as the original U47 and the CM7.
The CM7-GT comes standard with the K47 capsule which is identical to the original K47 used in the later versions of the original U47 (1959-1964). The M7 capsule can be special ordered in the CM7-GT for a $200 up-charge. The connector at the bottom a 3/4 size Tuchel connector used on the U67/M269.
Package includes: The CM7-GT microphone system comes complete with a NOS Vintage Telefunken glass tube, a new K47 dual membrane capsule, a historically accurate "large style" BV8 transformer power supply made in the U.S.A., tube mic cable, wooden microphone box, and 1-year warranty.
"All Wunder Audio Microphones are hand made in the U.S. because we want to keep the quality of the metal work on same level as the early microphones, this is not is not achievable with modern CNC machinery, wildly used in China. Capsules, grille heads, rails, fine sanding surface on bodies, welding of capsule holders and baskets are purely a hand made process".
All models are now shipping with:
Very high end USA made Historic Appearance PSU's Historic Appearance Serial number Badges on Mic and PSU. CM7 and CM7GT ships with a Historic Appearance higher quality Shockmount.
Manufacturer's Note:
We measured quite a few original M7 capsules and found that depending on the serial number stamped on the capsule itself or production run of the M7, the backplate had a different backplate depth. This corresponded to different Frequency Response curves.
We just started shipping the V17 version of the Berlin M7 as an option in the CM7. The V17 has the warmer sound that is found in later U47's. The earlier capsule, the V15 has been shipped in all our CM7's up until recently. Although this version was extremely very well received occasionally someone would compare the CM7 to a later U47 (after ser no. 1000) and found the U47 warmer. Knowing what accounted for this we incorporated this capsule into our mics as an optional choice.
Not to make things more confusing, we are also tuning both the V15 & V17 into subgroups according to their nominal capacitance. The V17 ranges from 78-83pF. This is the exact value on M7 capsules found in original U47's (from approx. serial number 1000-5800 according to Neumann data compiled from Jan-Feb 1959).
The V15 range from 88-93pF. The higher Pico farad value yields brighter upper mids. Two of our test microphones are Neumann U47 serial no. 007 and 071 circa 1949. I actually had these microphones tested by Neumann in 2001 and noticed the higher boost at 5k than the later mics. This extra brightness, however, makes the track "sit" in the mix without having to use EQ. This V1.5 capsule started shipping in 2005 as the standard capsule in the CM7.
A musician would compare these options to the variations in found guitar strings or Trumpet mouthpieces.
The V15 & V17 frequency response sweeps are were consistent with the V17 having relatively 2dB less upper mid boost. These findings were identical for a later number U47 serial number 4324. (See Frequency Response chart below)

The
Wunder Audio CM50 Tube Microphone
comes with a small omnidirectional transducer mounted on a 40 mm diameter acrylic sphere. "Simply one of the most wonderful sounding room mics in the world." The CM50 represents the pinnacle in a revered line of microphones that stretches back to the very earliest days of the Pro Audio. The inspiration is classic, the execution is cutting-edge. We have successfully recreated the small pressure transducer (similar to the capsule for the KM series microphones).
Sonic footprint of the CM50:
This unique capsule creates a gradual "presence rise" in the microphone's on-axis frequency response. Yielding a rather substantial 8 dB on-axis peak at high frequencies. This affect can be discerned in the midrange and more increasingly so at higher frequencies. There is relatively no effect at low frequencies since the sphere is smaller than low frequency wavelengths.
These effects enable the CM50 to be placed at considerably greater distances from the sound source than regular omni mics thus picking up more ambiance in the lows and midrange while maintaining focus in the "Air" region and at higher frequencies. The result is a stunningly clear recording ordinarily not possible at these distances.
The CM 50 can be placed far enough from the source that the distances to the nearest and farthest instruments will be perceived exactly as an audience experiences them, where the relative loudness, arrival time and the clarity of the instruments will be in precise balance with each other.
Package includes: CM50, Plush Oak Box, Yoke Mount, Historical Power supply, Original Large Tuchel Bayonet connected mic cable.

The
Wunder PEQ2R
is the 19" rack mount version of the PEQ2. It has a conductive plastic logarithmic taper output level potentiometer, which acts as an output fader, a 48V phantom power switch and a quarter inch instrument input jack. We've taken the PEQ1R and enhanced it to make it even better!
Features:
NEW Beefy Output Stage added to tail end before Output Transformer
Improved Gain switches with over 3x the gold contact area per switch position
Improved EQ switches with over 3x the gold contact area per switch position
Light Pipe Pushbuttons like on the Wunderbar instead of Pushbutton or small C&K toggle switches
Discrete Active HP Filter
LED metering with Green signal indicator and Red clip light
1/4" instrument input is selectable from Active or Classic Input on PEQ2R
Gain knob now has one extra counter clockwise position to achieve -6db less gain (-24dB instead of -18dB like on old units)
Totally redesigned Enclosure with thicker gauge metal and tack welded with better RF protection
Thicker faceplate on PEQ2R
1% Metal Film resistors for lower noise floor and better matching from channel to channel.
Sturdier amp compensation or RF rejection capacitors
New PCB with revised and optimized component layout with beefier traces.
RF filtering
Upgraded “NIC” transformers

The
Wunder Audio PEQ2
is a fully Class-A discrete 1970's-style mic-pre/ equalizer. The design employs proprietary, custom-designed mic, line, and output transformers. It can directly replace the Neve 1073. The 18-way gold plated Amphenol connector will mate with vintage Neve "80 Series" consoles or racks. The similarity to the 1073 stops there!
Compared to a 1073, the PEQ2 has more equalizing power with better lows and more presence in the mids and highs for a sound that lifts the veil off your input signal. The reason for this is simple: the PEQ2 has eight Class-A gain stages where the 1073 has four. The extra gain yields more Class-A headroom resulting in a wider pure path audio. The PEQ2, however, is NOT a 1073 clone. It has its own unique circuit, and over the last four years we have made about 20 modifications in the prototype. The only way to explain the sound is that is it like a 1073 with a deeper low end "that goes all the way to China" and more depth overall in the mids and highs without that phasey boxy sound. The 3db roll-off points are 8.7Hz on the low and 118KHz on the top end.
The EQ is the best we have ever heard, reminiscent of a powerful Pultec, but with more frequencies. The drum sounds you can dial up are invincible, and nothing can make the vocals stand out in a mix like the PEQ2.
There are twice as many amplifier stages in the PEQ2, which provides 60db line in gain compared with the 1073s 30db! This gives you more sonic headroom. The 60db of line in gain also allows for a wide range of instrument/line levels. You can plug a bass guitar, guitar or keyboards directly into the Line Input for a huge, better than any direct box sound. One can also use the Line input as a totally separate microphone input utilizing the large Line transformer. With 42 dB of gain, the Line input stage works great as a 2nd Mic Pre! All the Gain and EQ switches used on the PEQ2 series are custom made by Elma, which were designed for us at their factory in Switzerland.
The custom made (long shaft) potentiometers are Vishay audio-grade, made with conductive plastic for a long life (one million cycles). You can't beat this switch/pot combination. The EQ and Phase switches for the PEQ-22 are by Isostat, giving a vintage touch.
We have recapped so many consoles and tape machines in the past and found the Panasonic FC 105°C electrolytic capacitors to be our favorite so that's what we are incorporating. Vintage-style, rare polystyrene foil capacitors are used throughout. High-current Metal can, not plastic, BC107B and BC109C transistors imported from the UK are used throughout the amplifier stages. These metal transistors are better than their plastic counterparts when used in an Audio circuit. A single circuit board offers a vast sonic improvement over 5 separate boards found in a 1073 eliminating the use of multiple edge-board connectors and redundant wiring.
The hook-up wire is also imported from the UK and is hand assembled to "Military Spec". The enclosures are CAD designed to 1/1000" tolerance and are bright-nickel plated with PEM nut hardware throughout for solid construction. Finally, we CNC mill the custom-designed anodized aluminum knob-set which gives the module character. The boost and cut knobs are solid brass with shiny nickel plating. The knob markers are white plastic dowels embedded in the knob so the white mark will never wear off. We also provide an optional "Vintage Look" faceplate in RAF grey. Additionally one person, our best master craftsman, builds every single PEQ 2 series, from PCB to testing. A PEQ2 series Mic-pre/EQ is one of the best pieces of gear made anywhere in the world, in any given year.

The
Wunder Audio PAFOURplus
is the 19" rack mount, four-channel microphone preamplifier version of the PEQ2. We've added new features to every channel of the original PAFOUR to make this new version a definite plus.
PAFOURplus New Features:
NEW Beefy Output Stage added just before Output Transformer.
Discrete Active HP Filter.
Output fader.
Improved Gain switches, over 3 x the gold contact area per switch position.
Light Pipe Pushbuttons replaces small C&K toggle switches.
LED metering with Green signal indicator and Red clip light.
Gain knob has one extra position to achieve -6db less gain (-24dB).
Redesigned Enclosure with thicker gauge metal and tack welded with better RF protection.
Thicker faceplate.
1% Metal Film resistors for lower noise floor and better matching from channel to channel.
Sturdier amp compensation or RF rejection capacitors
New PCB with revised and optimized component layout with beefier traces.
RF filtering
The PAFOURplus is a fully Class-A discrete 1970's-style mic-pre utilizing the exact mic-pre circuit as the PEQ2. The design employs proprietary, custom-designed mic, and output transformers. It is no secret that the huge sound is due to the make-up of the Mu-Metal transformers. In the PAFOURplus, you get four channels of the Wunder Audio sound in one unit!
The PAFOURplus cuts no corners. We have included the same exact transformers from the PEQ2. The mere size of these transformers is unprecedented in a 4-channel mic pre unit. The Core material was made in 1970 and yields a fat vintage sound with virtually no phase shift. The low turn ratio of the windings (1:1.4) yields a mic pre that can handle very high level with no need for a pad.
The Instrument Input circuit includes the complete Line Input stage of the PEQ2R so you can utilize the now famous way of recording, for example DI Bass Guitar, directly into the Line Input of the Wunder, instead of using a direct box approach into the mic pre. This line Input stage has a huge 60 dB of input gain! No other multi-channel mic pre incorporates this Line Input approach with this much gain.
New Added output stage. The mic pre is identical to what we use in the PEQ2 series but we added an additional amplifier stage at the tail end of the existing output amp for even more headroom .
Peak LEDs for each channel.
Custom designed knob sets are milled from aluminum and anodized red. Knob markers are embedded with white plastic dowels so the white mark will never wear off.
