Purple Audio
The
Purple Audio Action
features a constant impedance 600 ohm input attenuator feeding the input transformer, just like our MC77 units. This makes the input more resistant to overload by hot signals. After the input transformer, the signal is attenuated by the same gain reduction FET as in the MC77. The attenuated signal is buffered by our class A KDJ3 opamp, which feeds the output fader. Lastly, our class AB KDJ4 output opamp drives our custom hexafilar nickel and steel output transformer. The total gain (with no attenuation) is 45dB, just like the MC77.
The attack and release times cover a broader range than the MC77, which can cause distortion... which may or may not be what you are looking for. Use at extremes with caution. The ratios are the same as the MC77, and the threshhold moves up as the ratio goes up, just like the MC77.
In the center of the unit is an SMT sidechain and stereo link amplifier, below that is our SMT compression LED ladder meter driver. Behind that is the SMT input and output tricolor LED meter driver.
Stereo linking is accomplished by cross connecting pins 3 & 6 on the edge connector. On the Purple Sweet Ten, there is a second output XLR that can be used to link two Actions. The link is accomplished using a XLR-F to XLR-F cable with pin 2 on one XLR-F connecting to pin 3 on the other XLR-F and vice versa. Plug in the cable, flip the front panel switch and you are linked. Non-Purple racks do not have an easy way to connect pins 3 and 6, and will need modification to link two Action units.
The
Purple Audio Action Features:
Input attenuator feeding input transformer
Output level control
Input and output tricolor LED metering
Eight LED GR metering
Five ratios including "All buttons in" mode
Attack and Release controls
True Relay Bypass
Stereo Linking

Introducing the Biz Mk: the same Biz you love with two new features
:
Mic / Line switch for rack input
Bridging line input for high output mics or line level sources Use with our Moiyn 8x2 mixer module in the Sweet Ten rack for mic or line mixing
DI Load switch for front panel input
33kohms as in the original Biz or 100kohms for a more open tone
The
Purple Audio Biz Mk
is a unique sounding, three amplifier, discrete microphone preamp module designed to work in standard "500" racks.
The smooth Gain control helps you dial in the sound you want. If the output level is too high (the Class A/B output opamp can pump out up to +27 dBu), you can ride the level down with the separate Level control. Pressing the "Dual" switch splits the gain between two of our Class A opamps, enabling up to 75 dBu of clean gain, making the Biz a perfect match for ribbon microphones.
With different Gain, Level, and Dual settings the Biz can produce an infinite variety of tonal variations with the same amount of output level. The front panel DI helps you record instruments and line level sources with unrivaled clarity and punch. Two LEDs clearly indicate signal level for the gain and output stages at a glance, turning green to indicate signal present, yellow for 10dB below clipping, and red for clipping.
For easy serviceability and tweaking, the Purple discrete opamps can be replaced with any standard discrete opamp or a DIP-8 IC. The Biz uses our custom output transformer which provides two isolated outputs (when supported by the chassis).

The
LILPEQr
is Purple Audio's take on the classic program (aka final mix) equalizer. It offers high and low frequency shelving bands, each with three carefully selected corner frequencies to choose from, and a switchable fader knob for overall level control.
The LILPEQr emulates the colorful 3D richness and useful responses of our favorite vintage tube (aka valve) program EQs (namely, the Lang PEQ-1 and the Klangfilm RZ062), but in a compact, solid-state format. The LILPEQr will add air, weight, and glue to an already balanced mix. Additionally you can also use the LILPEQr to immediately and intuitively alter the overall tone of an individual source.
When the EQ is first switched in (center switch position - "IN" - LED off) your signal is injected passively into the tone network, directly following the input transformer. As with many classic program equalizers, this configuration allows for the ultimate in wide, lush, mix-buss response with extra "glue" and all that richness.
Flip the switch one more click (upper switch position - "IN+Level" - LED red) to activate the buffered "Level" control. Placed in between the input transformer and EQ network, these discrete, class A buffers change the response ever so slightly, making the signal seem a bit tighter and more focused. This mode is more useful on individual sources within a mix.
Relay true bypass (lower switch position - "BYP" - LED green) allows for easy before and after EQ comparisons, and a simple overall circuit path allows for wide bandwidth so that everything passes through... sounding better! In program mode ("IN"), with both EQ knobs centered, frequency response is +/- 0.5dBu from 20Hz to 20kHz, and extends below 10Hz and well beyond 120kHz before any drooping occurs.
Features
Big sound, small package
Major vibe, minimal interface
High Frequency shelf boost/cut 12dB at 5kHz, 10kHz, or 28.5kHz ("AIR")
Low Frequency shelf boost/cut 20db at 50Hz, 80Hz, or 160Hz
Switchable, buffered level control for overall volume adjustment
Relay True Bypass
Tricolor LED level meters
Transformer balanced in and out, with bridging 20kΩ input
100% Class A, discrete signal path
Current consumption: 60mA
Over Current Resettable Fused (prevents any module problem from affecting your rack)

The
Purple Audio MC77
supercedes the MC76 re-engineered 1176 type FET Limiter. The MC77 recreates the audio circuitry of the revision E 1176, using modern components matched to the original.
One significant component is the input attenuator. The input attenuator that was custom made for the original revisions A-F 1176 and for the Purple MC76 by Clarostat was discontinued in 2002. It was a J series T-pad attenuator with two 600Ω "build out" resistors to keep a constant 600Ω load on the source and primary of the input transformer. Clarostat changed carbon manufacturers and the new carbon manufacturer was unwilling or unable to make the part. Purple temporarily stopped making the MC76 to find a solution. We tried several three deck Clarostat 70 series pots in different configurations to achieve the same loading and to match the taper. We found a solution that matched the original; both the originals and replacement parts are drawn in the schematic that you can download below. At the same time, we looked at feedback gathered from the hundreds of satisfied MC76 users. Based on that feedback, we incorporated useful new features into the revised unit, which was designated the MC77.
NEW features in the MC77:
True Bypass via sealed relay with front panel switch
Improved stereo linking with front panel switch
Sidechain insert loop or key input with front panel switch
Buffered VU meter can monitor input or output level at +4dBu
LED meter lights that don't burn out as incandescents do
Heavy gauge black stainless steel enclosure
115v/230v operation switchable from rear panel (serial# 600)
Features inherited from the MC76:
Discrete Transistor Audio Path Electronics
Single Element Class A Output Amplifier
Transformer Balanced XLR Inputs and Outputs
Zener Shunt Regulated Audio Power Supply
Compression Ratios - 4:1, 8:1, 12:1 and 20:1
Fast Attack Time - 20 microseconds to 800 microseconds
Release Time - 50 milliseconds to 1.1 second
Gain of 45dB (full gain with no limiting)
Ruggedized Design - PCB stiffener, chassis mount transformers
Purple Anodized Aluminum Front Panel

The
Purple Audio Odd Equalizer
is a modern update of the classic "swinging inputs" console EQ, with four easy to use bands. Each band uses a high quality inductor and carefully selected caps to give two switchable frequencies. The bands are carefully shaped and spaced to be musical, even at full 12dB boost or cut. The highest band can also be switched from bell to shelf, to boost frequencies extending well beyond 20kHz.
There are illuminated pushbuttons for additional fixed low (red) and high (yellow) cut filters. A relay true bypass (green) allows for easy comparison with unprocessed source material. With the low and high cut switched out, and all four bands set to 0, the frequency response is +/- 0.25dB from 15Hz to 25kHz, and -3dB at 60kHz. Has the same input and output transformer as the Biz
With specialized input and output transformers, the Odd has plenty of headroom, even at full boost. The entire circuit is discrete, with no electrolytic capacitors in the signal path, and no servo amps. With only two active stages, the current draw is low enough to work in any rack, and leave plenty of juice for other modules.
Specifications:
High Frequecy Peak/Bell 12kHz/8kHz
High Mid Frequency 4Khz/1k8kHz
Low Mid Frequency 650Hz/300Hz
Low Frequency 150Hz/75Hz
Low Cut 50 Hz

The
Purple Audio Pants
uses a unique dual-bobbin input transformer from Cinemag unlike any other. The smooth Gain control helps you dial in the sound you want. If the output level is too high, you can ride the level down with the separate Level control. Pressing the "High" switch changes the feedback network to provide an insane 78dB of clean gain, a great match for very low output mics.
With different Gain, High mode switch, and Level settings the Pants can produce many different tones with the same amount of output level. The front panel DI goes through a FET buffer into the input transformer, adding an extra dimension to the sound of the preamp. The DI load switch gives you two options, making it even easier to get the best direct tone for your instrument.
The Pants uses our custom output transformer which provides two isolated outputs (when supported by the chassis).

The
Purple Audio TAV 10 Band Inductor EQ
is a new take on the console graphic, with ten easy to use bands. Each band uses a high quality inductor and carefully selected caps to set the center frequency. At full boost and full cut the bands are narrow enough to still be useful individually, but at lower settings the bands widen out for more gentle shaping. Even at full boost and cut, the filters are shaped to be musical and useful.
An illuminated push button for relay true bypass (green) allows for easy comparison with unprocessed source material. A Tricolor LED meters the signal. With the low and high cut switched out, and all four bands set to 0, the frequency response is +/- 0.25dB from 15Hz to 25kHz, and -3dB at 60kHz.
