The
JoeCo BlackBox Recorder
is the first dedicated large-scale multi-channel recorder for audio acquisition and capturing live performance. Unlike many other devices, it doesn’t double as a studio recorder or a cut-down workstation - there are no plug-ins or effects to modify the captured sound. Quite simply, what you hear is what you get!
Available in both analogue and digital variants, the BlackBox Recorder family offers a choice of professional interfaces to any live mixing console. The recorder can capture up to 24 channels of 24Bit/96kHz audio in Broadcast WAV (BWAV) format. For large scale recordings, multiple units can be linked together.
Audio is recorded directly onto a removable USB2 disk drive or USB Flash drive (FAT32 formatted). Files can then be instantly imported into any Mac- or PC-based Digital Audio Workstation for editing, remixing and re-purposing. Using standard universally accepted file and disk formats on external storage solutions eliminates the time normally required to load the recordings into a workstation for subsequent processing and mixing. In the modern creative environment, time is in short supply and being able to instantly load large amounts of audio data is crucial to fast turnaround productions.
Simple to operate, the BlackBox Recorder's sleek front panel has an intuitive menu-driven user interface, touch sensitive transport controls, data wheel and function buttons. A foot switch input is also provided and can be set up to duplicate the record button function for hands-free operation. The main color screen displays the current recording time and the amount of time remaining on disk. The front panel LED meters have a sticky peak feature to help guard against overloading the inputs. Each meter element varies in brightness according to the level, to give a remarkably accurate representation.
Ease of use is complemented by fully professional control and synchronization facilities, along with a wealth of time-saving features that include virtual sound-checking; disk drive formatting; the ability to create a headphone monitor mix with level and pan on every track; a keyboard interface and Name Manager for creating templates and modifying track or song names, plus a variety of shortcuts for speedily navigating menu options and transport controls. Within the menu structure all key variables can be modified: the sample rate, track arming, use of time code, digital audio clock setup, naming recordings, input and output levels, and setting up loop points. The recorder also offers a range of enhancements for film, TV and broadcast applications including support for 23.98fps time code, 9-pin support for edit controllers, and iXML support.
A number of "fail safe" features ensure secure audio capture at all times, including playback lockout and a "Safe 'n' Sound" record recovery function that enables recorded audio files to be recovered after a sudden accidental loss of power, or forgetting to stop recording before powering off the system.
BlackBox BBR1A with ADAT optical I/O
:
The BlackBox Recorder with ADAT optical I/O enables audio capture via a digital mixing console supporting ADAT (TOSlink) inputs and outputs. This BBR model can also interface directly with any of the high quality A-D converters that incorporate ADAT outputs.
Three 8-channel ADAT inputs can be connected from the mixer and three ADAT outputs can return the signals back to the mixer. All other BlackBox Recorder features remain unchanged and the full analogue I/O capability of the standard BBR1 is still available for situations where the ADAT interface is not suitable.
Note: Due to limitations in the ADAT format, use of this option restricts 24-track recording to single speed sample rates (44.1kHz and 48kHz). At double sample rates the unit employs the SMUX2 protocol reducing the I/O count to 12 channels. However, the full 24/24/96kHz facility is still available in the analogue domain

BlackBox BBR1B with Balanced analogue I/O
:
The BlackBox Recorder with balanced I/O enables audio capture via a mixing console with balanced insert points or direct outputs. The three lower 25-way female D-type connectors are used as balanced inputs and the three upper 25-way female as balanced outputs. The unit can use the same high quality D-type cables as for the unbalanced BBR1, but these are not supplied as there are too many different types of termination (1/4" TRS, XLR male, XLR female, 25-way D-type, etc.).
In the same manner as the unbalanced model, the BBR1B loops the inputs directly to the outputs via relays when in record or stop so that even a power failure on the BBR cannot affect the audio through the PA. Other BlackBox Recorder features remain unchanged.
The balanced I/O interface uses high quality balancing receivers and transmitters and has been designed specifically for the BlackBox Recorder to be fully transparent.

BlackBox BBR1D with AES/EBU Digital I/O
:
The BlackBox Recorder with digital AES/EBU I/O enables audio capture via a digital mixing console with AES/EBU inputs and outputs. Three 25-way female D-type connectors, each carrying 8 channels of inputs and outputs, can be connected directly into the digital mixer to capture and return the signals without any additional A-D conversion, giving 12 stereo channels of AES/EBU inputs and 12 stereo channels of AES/EBU outputs. Analogue inputs are also still available (switchable). All other BlackBox Recorder features remain unchanged.
The AES/EBU interfaces can operate at up to 96kHz and conform to the AES standard (AES-3:2003). It is also still possible to chain multiple BBR1D units together to make larger multi-track recordings.

BlackBox BBR1U with Unbalanced analogue I/O
:
The BlackBox Recorder with Unbalanced I/O is designed to plug across the insert points of a standard analogue mixing console via three 25-way female D-type connectors on the rear of the unit.
Three 1/4-inch TRS terminated multi-core looms are supplied for connecting the BBR to the console (TASCAM analogue format). Inside the unit, relays route the audio signal from input to output in all modes except during playback. This provides an additional level of safety so that in the event of a power failure on the BBR, the audio through the PA will not be affected.
In this model, eight insert returns are also brought out to TRS jacks on the rear of the unit, allowing additional outboard equipment to be plugged into insert points as required.

BlackBox BBR-DANTE:
The new BlackBox BBR-DANTE Recorder is designed to record and replay up to 32 channels of audio data from a Dante network. It records at 44.1kHz and 48kHz directly to Broadcast WAV files on an external USB2 drive.
The BBR-DANTE connects to any Dante-enabled network device from a range of console and converter manufacturers including Allen&Heath, Yamaha, MIDAS, DiGiCo and Focusrite to name but a few. Designed to support standard network components and switches, it can also record 8 channels of analogue (balanced line in) alongside 24 channels of Dante for capturing audience and ambience.
The BBR-DANTE will lock to or generate word clock, as well as locking to the incoming Dante audio stream. In contrast with previous models, continuous channel metering on every channel is not provided and there is no internal mixer. Instead, individual channels, or pairs of channels can be monitored on a PFL bus providing both hi-resolution metering and headphone monitoring.

Based on the award-winning, tried and tested BlackBox Recorder design, the new BlackBox BBR64-MADI Recorder is designed to record and replay up to 64 channels of MADI data and yet still only occupies one unit of rack space! The recorder can capture the full 64 channels at standard sample rates directly to Broadcast WAV files on an external USB2 drive. Double sample rate MADI recording (up to 96kHz) is also accommodated.
The recorder sports both coaxial and optical MADI connections for interfacing with any MADI equipped console or other equipment. Additionally, the BBR64-MADI caters for 56-channel legacy MADI and can record a further 8 channels of analogue (balanced line in) for capturing the audience reaction or general ambience.
The BBR64-MADI will lock to or generate word clock, as well as locking to the received MADI data stream. The MADI input is echoed direct to the output to ease system integration. The
Tascam DP-004
Digital Pocketstudio is based on 30 years of easy-to-use cassette Portastudios, updated with four tracks of CD-quality digital recording. Like those groundbreaking Portastudios, a row of knobs set levels and pan instead of a list of menus.

A built-in stereo condenser microphone makes it simple to record anywhere you go, perfect for concerts, rehearsals and songwriting inspirations. A pair of 1/4" jacks on the rear panel allow you to connect your own microphones or sources. You can even switch the inputs to guitar level for recording.
The DP-004 allows you to build up your arrangement until you've filled up all four tracks. The Bounce feature allows you to consolidate tracks and make room for more overdub layers. Also available is an autopunch feature for fixing problems, track editing and an undo function.
Mixing is also built into the Digital Pocketstudio. Once you set levels and pan, record your mix onto a dedicated stereo master track. You're able to transfer your tracks and mixes to a computer over USB 2 for CD burning and sharing online.
Despite its go-anywhere compact design - smaller than a paperback book - the DP-004 is simple enough for students, songwriters and musicians who want to keep their recording process simple and creative.

Tascam culminates 30 years of Portastudio Recording with the
Tascam DP-008
, a portable 8-track recorder for all musicians. TASCAM's DP-008 is an eight-track recorder that captures CD-quality audio, two tracks at a time. You can use built-in microphones to grab ideas, plug condenser mics into the XLR inputs or plug a guitar directly in to lay tracks. There's even a metronome and chromatic tuner built-in for tight-sounding tracks. The DP-008 also allows you to digitally bounce tracks to make room for more, and touches like editing and undo make recording stress-free.
Each track on the DP-008 has its own row of knobs for level, pan and effects, just like our classic cassette Portastudios of the past. The effects knob sends to a built-in stereo reverb processor with hall, room, stage and other effects. Each track also has EQ to tailor the sound for your mix. When your song is complete, mix it to a dedicated stereo track while riding levels and flipping pan as much as you want. You can export your mix, or even individual tracks, as a WAV file.
Tascam invented the home recording studio with the original cassette Portastudio. The DP-008 takes the ease-of-use of those classic songwriting tools and adds portability, digital sound quality, effects and mixdown to bring home recording into the 21st century. Simplify your recording workflow with TASCAM's DP-008.

The
Tascam DR-680
brings multi-channel portable recording within reach of any musician for polished live, location and surround recordings. Up to eight tracks can be recorded to solid-state SD card media at 96kHz/24-bit Broadcast WAV quality. Six mic inputs provide phantom power and 60dB of gain for great-sounding recordings with your condenser microphones. Record the six microphones along with a digital S/PDIF source for 8 track recording. Each mic input has a selectable low cut filter and analog limiter for optimal sound.
Inputs can be monitored using a built-in mixer with level and pan controls for each input. The stereo mixdown can even be recorded along with the six mics for quick stereo playback of the event. There's even a built-in speaker to check recordings without headphones.
In addition to WAV recording up to 96kHz, the DR-680 captures stereo audio at 192kHz/24-bit for audiophile-quality masters. The DR-680 records up to four channels of MP3 audio for web-ready recordings. Two of the recorders can be connected with a cascade cable for up to 16-track recording on battery power.
Multi-channel portable recording has never been as simple or affordable as the TASCAM DR-680.
