Ryan McGuire first connected with Vintage King Audio as a customer while building his studio, Teletone Recording and Mastering (Pontiac, MI) in 2005. As owner and principal engineer, McGuire outfitted Teletone entirely with gear purchased from Vintage King Audio and walked away impressed with the outstanding service and extensive knowledge of the staff. Having studied business at Albion College and the London School of Economics, McGuire decided to combine his formal education with his long running passion for audio and music. Now five years later, McGuire oversees Vintage King’s business development and International Sales as well as vintage/used purchasing. In 2009, he was appointed Director of Sales for M1 Distribution, Vintage King’s international counterpart that connects manufacturers like Shadow Hills Industries, Barefoot Sound, Inward Connections, and Retro Instruments with like-minded dealers around the world

About Ryan McGuire
An avid musician himself (guitar, bass, drums, synths and programming are just a few of his credits), McGuire continues to operate Teletone Recording, providing unique insight for Vintage King clients, from both sides of the sale.  When he’s not working at Vintage King, McGuire isn’t far from his studio – in his spare time he writes, produces and performs music on the regular.

What is your favorite piece of gear?
Neumann U67, Neve 1073’s, Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor, Barefoot Sound MM27’s, Urei 1176LN, Inward Connections TSL-3, Retro 2A3…I can’t have just one!

What piece of gear do you think changed history?
The Neumann U47 as it brought a whole new level of detail and presence to recordings and continues to do so today.

What is your most memorable Vintage King sale?
Outfitting a remote truck for Pete Townshend of the Who.  It was an interesting project as the goal was to recreate a compact setup true to the gear used for recording the early Who albums, that could also be eventually housed in a truck for the re-recording of the classic “Quadraphenia” album.  Originally Pete felt constrained by the 8 and 16 track tape machines available at the time. He was intrigued by the prospect of re-cutting the record as accurately as possible with as many available original rooms, instruments, etc. to take advantage of the nearly unlimited track counts available with a modern Protools HD rig.

Hi Ryan,
I couldn't thank you more for your quick great service. The Bricasti M7 just came in time so i can use it for the new Herbie Hancock album.

Much Appreciated!

Hey Ryan.

Vintage King is by far the greatest music store i had to do with ever! If you don't know, it also seems you have an incredibly good reputation over here in our small country! Just want to let you know :-)

I'm already getting excited about my next order i will place (the stuff we took out) but it will probably first be after the summer sometime though.

Cheers,
Alex

Hi Ryan!
I just wanna take a few minutes to tell you how much I enjoyed my first Vintage King experience. In almost 20 years in Pro audio buying, never did I receive a unit so well packed and exactly as described. Works flawlessly. The whole process has been so smooth. I will never hesitate to do business with you guys in the future and will recommend you to everyone I know. Thanks very very much.

CASE STUDY:
The Oberlin Conservatory of Music began planning the construction of their state of the art Joseph R. Clonick Recording Studio over ten years ago, with acoustic consultant Dana Kierkegaard of Kierkegaard Acoustic Design at the helm. While developing plans with the college’s project liaison, Michael Lynn, Kierkegaard turned to Vintage King’s Ryan McGuire for assistance with the studio’s new gear. Kierkegaard has worked with Vintage King (and McGuire in particular) on previous projects; the pair took the same innovative approach to selecting gear for the Clonick Recording Studio and performance space.

“Working with Dana Kirkegaard on this project was a pleasure as he is very familiar with the best audio gear available both past and present,” says Ryan McGuire of Vintage King. “He had Oberlin’s best interest in mind while selecting gear that’s a bit ‘outside of the box’ compared to what most educational institutions install nowadays. I really believe the result is a studio that rivals the best in the United States. The Clonick Recording Studio will be relevant and up to date for decades to come and will offer Oberlin staff and students the flexibility to handle any project that comes their way.”

Now equipped with a 16 channel Rupert Neve Designs 5088 Console with Shadow Mix Automation, McGuire and the team at Oberlin created a unique, state of the art package of gear for the new space, from the stereo pair of Telefuken V76’s in a custom Vintage King rack to the Neve 8816 and Thermionic Culture Phoenix Mastering Compressor (a complete list of gear can be found above).

An impressive roster of musicians have since utilized the state of the art facility, including pianist and composer Hiromi Uehara who mixed her latest album with producer Michael Bishop, Richard King, principal hornist of the Cleveland Orchestra, and Stevie Wonder, who stopped by to play the studio’s Hamburg Steinway during the studio’s opening ceremony festivities.
