Telefunken Elektroakustik
The
Telefunken AR-51
is designed in the tradition of the classic mics of the past, utilizing the same circuit design as the classic Telefunken ELA M 251E. The AR-51 employs new cost-efficient manufacturing methods to meet a price point suitable to any recording studio, from major World Class facilities to voiceover rooms and home project studios. The new R-F-T AR-51 utilizes only premium components, including a vintage New Old Stock (NOS) tube that has been rigidly tested for noise and microphonics, as in the ELA M 251E. The AR-51 also features a globally-sourced power supply and capsule, both rigorously tested prior to installation.
As with all products in the R-F-T range of Telefunken Elektroakustik microphones, the circuit board has been designed for superior current handling, permitting the amplifier to have full access to the necessary "power on demand" for handling low frequency and transient information. Modifications have been made to the amplifier circuit to optimize the performance of the capsule and a signal path that includes the same European manufactured output transformer found in every ELA M 251 E built since 1960.
At the Telefunken Elektroakustic studios in South Windsor, CT, audio engineers have successfully tested a wide range of applications for this new large diaphragm microphone. The microphone is especially suitable for recording acoustic and electric guitars, piano, percussion, for drum overheads and close miked drums, as well as for both male and female vocals. The perfect complement to the company's acclaimed AK-47, the AR-51 is a significant addition to any studio's microphone locker.

If there were ever a microphone that was the epitome of classic, hi-fidelity sound, it would be the AKG C-12. The first of the AKG line of selectable pattern condenser mics, the
Telefunken C-12
is revered for its smooth, airy response. Considered by many to be the finest sounding microphone ever produced, original C-12 microphones are still in use in recording studios throughout the world.
Telefunken Elektroakustik is proud to manufacture the C-12 once again. Our new CK12 capsule is built from the original manufacturers technical specifications, and utilizes a Haufe (manufacturer of the original) output transformer built to match the original, and a microphone grade 6072a tube just like the original system.
Our new C-12 is incredibly detailed, capturing all the subtle nuances of a performance and transferring them back to the listener in a manner that is so realistic; you'll think you're listening to the source directly. Its silky smooth top end provides plenty of air without sounding harsh or artificial. Its midrange speaks clearly and articulately, capturing the source with a natural presence. Its low end is tight and focused, perfectly balanced with the rest of the frequency range. These qualities make the C-12 a fantastic choice for all types of instruments, lending itself especially well to drum overheads, acoustic guitar, and vocals.
Coveted by an extensive list of professional recording engineers, the Telefunken Elektroakustik C-12 historic reissue is an exceptional microphone that will be a treasured addition to your microphone collection for many decades to come.

The original ELA M 250 and 251 were designed to conform to the power supply standards that were set by both German and Austrian national broadcast companies. This meant that they needed to be designed around the famous AC701/k vacuum tube and work with N52 power supplies made by TAB, Siemens, Telefunken, etc.
Like their ancestors, the new
Telefunken ELA M 250 and 251
from Telefunken Elektroakustik feature that same amplifier designed around the Telefunken AC701/k vacuum tube. Coupled with our newly manufactured CK-12 capsule [which is built from the original AKG Acoustics drawings] and the exact output transformer, custom made for us by the original manufacturer, and you have a microphone that is so amazing, you won't believe your ears.
The ELA M 250 and 251 still exhibit the same detail and presence as the ELA M 250E and 251E, yet they are slightly smoother sounding then their "E" version counterparts. This can be attributed to the AC701/k vacuum tube, which has a particularly pleasing musical quality. It has been stated by a couple of experts that the reason for this is the physical size of the tube. Since the tube is so small, it is possible to excite a lot of electrons very quickly, which contributes to the silky "top end" and slightly smoother midrange for which these microphones are known.
Both the ELA M 250 and 251 are available in very limited quantities, due to the rarity of the AC701/k tube. Contact your favorite Telefunken Elektroakustik reseller for pricing and availability.

It all started with a switch. . .
8 years ago, Toni Fishman, owner and CEO of Telefunken Elektroakustik, had a brilliant idea. After speaking with numerous industry professionals about their historic Telefunken ELA M 250 and 251 microphones, he discovered that their polar pattern selector switch was notoriously fragile and often broke, leaving the mics unusable. As there were no available replacements, owners resorted to attempting to fix them on their own. Toni decided it was time that he did something about all these broken switches, so he set out to recreate it. However, it quickly became apparent to him that not only did he want to reverse engineer the switch, he wanted to recreate the whole thing. For the next two years, he was on a mission. He didn't just want to recreate the sound of the microphone; he wanted to recreate the look of the mic, the feel of the mic, the soul of the mic. He wanted to breath new life into a microphone that had been forgotten by a generation of recording engineers; bring it back from the dead. He located as many of the original blueprints as he could find. What was not available was re-drawn precisely from a multitude of pristine samples. What resulted from all this hard work and dedication was our flagship microphone, our proverbial phoenix: The
Telefunken ELA M 251E
.
So, what makes our ELA M 250 and 251 so special? The heart of these microphones, the CK-12 capsule, is hand built in our lab, constructed in the same manner it was more than 50 years ago. The output transformer is custom built for us by the original manufacturer (Haufe) and is wound to the original specifications. The tube is a New Old Stock GE 6072a, just like the original. We've even recreated all of the original plastics, the body tube, head grille, switch housing, capsule mount, side-straps… well, you get it. Every detail is there, meticulously reproduced, right down to the screws that hold the capsule together.
In use, the ELA M 250 and 251 are silky and smooth, open, airy, and incredibly detailed, with a sound that falls somewhere in between that of a U-47 and a C-12. Yet, it has it's own identity, it's own sonic fingerprint. It allows vocals to fit beautifully and effortlessly into a mix, conveys the natural sound of a drum kit when used on overheads, captures the tone and body of a steel string acoustic guitar with plenty of detail and clarity.
With everything these microphones have to offer, why settle for anything less? Telefunken Elektroakustik has made the acquisition of an ELA M 250E or 251E as simple as calling your favorite microphone supplier!!

Prior to 1959, Telefunken GmbH distributed Neumann GmbH microphones throughout the world. When Neumann GmbH decided to take their distribution direct, Telefunken GmbH commissioned Austrian company AKG Acoustics GmbH to produce a series of 5 microphones. This series of microphones was comprised of the famous ELA M 251, the ELA M 250, the stereo ELA M 270, and two small capsule microphones, the ELA M 260 and the ELA M 261.
Telefunken Elektroakustik is pleased to offer the
Telefunken Elektroakustik ELA M 260
, our first small diaphragm tube condenser. While not a historically accurate reproduction of the original ELA M 260 like the "Diamond Series" microphones, our version of the ELA M 260 is definitely built with the same attention to detail and level of quality as its Diamond Series brethren.
The ELA M 260 is supplied with a set of three interchangeable capsules (the 260 cardioid, 261 omni, and 262 hyper-cardioid), as well as a custom adaptor designed by our friend and fellow audio enthusiast Chip Machokas that permits the use of any of the AKG "CK" series of capsules (or capsules made by other manufacturers with the same thread) AND Neumann bayonet-style capsules. It also features a brand-new circuit design based around a Telefunken EF-732 vacuum tube and a custom wound output transformer made in the United States. The combination of these features yields a microphone that is unlike any other small diaphragm microphone that you have ever experienced.
In use, the ELA M 260 has plenty of tone with excellent detail and clarity. It captures sources with a natural presence, making it a fantastic tool for recording acoustic instruments of all types. Drum overheads, percussion, woodwinds, saxophones, strings, and especially acoustic guitar all sound amazing through the ELA M 260. Also, don't discount this for vocals just because it's small. Its unique tonal character is very well suited for a myriad of applications, both traditional and not.

One of the rarest microphones made by the original Telefunken GmbH was the stereo
Telefunken ELA M 270
. Serial number 101 was discovered in the early 1980's in Europe and brought to the shores of America where it lived in Ocean Way Studios for many years as the crowned jewel in their world famous microphone collection.
Telefunken Elektroakustik obtained this extraordinary piece of recording technology in order to recreate the design and offer it to the recording industry. Today, the original ELA M 270 resides at Blackbird studios in Nashville, but thanks to Telefunken Elektroakustik, you can have your very own.
Essentially a stereo version of the ELA M 251E, the ELA M 270 is available on a very limited, custom ordered basis, for the most discriminating of audio recordists.
The ELA M 251E is widely revered as a benchmark of hi-fidelity recording technology, and our ELA M 270 offers the same exceptional sonic performance in a stereo package. Perfectly suited for XY, M/S, or Blumlein techniques. Each capsule of the ELA M 270 offers selectable cardioid, bidirectional, or omni polar patterns.
Each Telefunken ELA M 270 stereo microphone is made to order. Exact custom matching of each component and capsules assures optimal stereo performance. Plus, utilizing either output of the microphone yields the same exceptional results as our Telefunken ELA M 251E.

The
Telefunken Elektroakustik M80
gives the user a superior alternative to the midrange-laden character of the "industry standard microphone."
Featuring a wider frequency response and higher SPL capabilities the M80 delivers condenser-like performance in a rugged dynamic design, producing a microphone equally suitable for voice, instruments or drums on both stage and in the studio.
Due to its low mass capsule and super thin (yet surprisingly rugged) capsule membrane the M80 presents a wider range of emotion from a live vocal with an intimacy that has been traditionally reserved for studio quality condenser microphones.
The head and capsule assembly has been designed to reduce proximity effect to which nets added low end clarity for vocals, while still providing "strength" and "authority" and an "open," "airy" character without adding danger of upper midrange feedback or "honk."
The M80 also features American made custom wound impedance matching transformer which is where the magic really takes place. When coupled with our proprietary capsule assembly, the results have won hearts and minds in far less time since it's introduction than we ever imagined possible.
The M80 is available in two versions: the "Standard Version" which includes a mic clip and bag; and the "Studio Set" which includes a mic clip, wooden box, and an additional black head grille.

Telefunken Elektroakustik microphones are known for their beautifully detailed acoustic reproduction. As they're made in a 'no holds barred' manner, that also makes them rather expensive for the average small studio or home enthusiast. With this in mind, the R-F-T series of microphones was created.
This new line of tube condenser microphones utilizes American designed electronics in conjunction with New Old Stock tubes and standardized parts from overseas manufacturers. While we have not "cut any corners," we have been able to provide a lower cost alternative to more expensive microphone systems, without sacrificing the qualities that you would expect from a Telefunken Elektroakustik microphone.
The amplifier found in the
Telefunken R-F-T AK47
features a new proprietary circuit designed around a NOS Telefunken EF-732 tube and a custom output transformer built in the good ol' U.S. of A. The dual sided large diaphragm capsule undergoes rigorous testing in our laboratory prior to installation in the R-F-T AK-47, and again during final testing and burn-in of the microphone.
Sonically, the R-F-T AK47 is a remarkably hi-fidelity microphone with a "present" but not "harsh" character, which in many ways is reminiscent of a historic M-49. The Telefunken EF-732 tube is very similar to the AC-701 tube in that is provides a "velvety" character to the overall tone of the microphone. When this tube is coupled with our custom designed output transformer the result is a microphone with superior high frequency detail, a rich and thunderous low end, without the upper mid-range frequency bump (what we call "guitar store brightness") often found in microphones in this price range. Instead, it has a delicate and intimate "air" that is usually found only in microphones three times the price.
The AK-47 delivers top shelf Telefunken Elektroakustik quality at a price that even mere mortals can afford. Contact your favorite Telefunken Elektroakustik reseller to acquire a tool you won't outgrow and will enjoy for a lifetime.

While Telefunken Elektroakustik is well known for our historic recreation microphones, they can be a bit pricey. The idea behind the R-F-T Series of microphones is to bring affordable microphones that deliver amazing tone to both budget minded studios and seasoned professionals. As a result of combining custom designed electronics with standardized parts from overseas manufacturers, Telefunken Elektroakustik has been able to bring the best of both worlds together in a series of microphones that are destined to become the classics of tomorrow.
While the capsule is built off shore, it is tested to very high tolerances for consistency in our Connecticut based US laboratory. The capsule is then coupled to our very own custom amplifier circuit and output transformer, both designed and built here in the USA. The core of this amplifier is a NOS [New Old Stock] ECC81 vacuum tube, which is mated with our custom circuit and output transformer to produce a microphone rivaling the performance and sonic quality of other microphones that are many (MANY!!) times its price.
In use, the
Telefunken R-F-T M16mkII
is a fantastic utility mic. Its smooth mid-range, open top end, and solid, well-balanced lows make it a great choice on anything from vocals to drums and percussion to acoustic guitar to saxophone. The remote pattern selector (located on the power supply) provides 9 different polar patterns, giving the user a myriad of choices for how to record the source sound in a manner that will best compliment their production.

The
Telefunken Elektroakustik R-F-T M216 Matrix
is an advanced stereo version of our popular M-16 mkII tube condenser microphone. It features a matched pair of 1" dual sided capsules (the same capsules found in the M-16 mkII), a New Old Stock ECC81 vacuum tube (the same tube found in the M-16 mkII), and a matched pair of custom wound BV314 output transformers (the same transformers found in the M-16 mkII) all in a single, easy to setup system.
However, the R-F-T M216 Matrix is more than just two of our M-16 mkII microphones stacked together. The system includes a custom designed power supply, the 916 MATRIX, which includes 3 distinct settings: Left/Right, MATRIX, and Z40. These settings allow the end user to utilize a mixture of microphone techniques and polar patterns.
L-R mode
allows both the UPPER and LOWER capsules to be independently controlled from remote polar pattern selectors on the power supply. The LOWER capsule is fixed in position while the upper capsule is capable of rotating up to 90 degrees. This gives engineers the ability to make use of XY, Mid/Side, and Blumlein recording techniques. The ability to polarize both the UPPER and LOWER capsule in virtually any pick-up patterns allows for an infinite amount of choices.
MATRIX mode
is identical to L-R mode, with the addition of two more outputs reversed in phase. This mode allows the same options for remote polar pattern selection (cardioid, omni, figure 8, and everything in between); resulting in an UPPER capsule XLR outputs (in phase & out of phase) as well as the LOWER capsule XLR outputs (in phase & out of phase). Skilled recording engineers can then exploit this multiple output format for the ability to change polar patterns AFTER they have been recorded! For engineers and studios working in the analog domain (no DAWs), this is an incredible feature, making this microphone of on the most versatile stereo tube microphones ever created. This could also be considered a "live" Blumlein output mode. Also, it is to be noted that MATRIX mode puts out a signal -6dB lower than standard L-R mode.
Z40 mode
is what makes the M216 Matrix so unique. Specialized custom transformers take the fixed LOWER capsule and blend it with an encoded UPPER capsule resulting in a true encoded Mid/Side image output. While this mode could be used with any polar pattern pick up configuration, it is best used with the LOWER capsule in cardioid and the UPPER capsule in Figure 8 with the headgrille turned to the 90 degree mark. The custom transformers then duplicate the UPPER figure 8 signal, resulting in one IN phase sent signal to the UPPER XLR OUT (LEFT), and another OUT of phase signal sent to the LOWER XLR OUT (RIGHT). Both of these are then blended evenly with the fixed LOWER capsule aimed at 0 degree to the signal source, then evenly sent to both LEFT (UPPER) and RIGHT (LOWER) outputs. The resulting MS image can then be taken out of the 916 MATRIX psu with the two in phase XLRs, perfectly encoded. There is now no need for post MS encoding in you DAW or Multi-track recorder, the 916 MATRIX power supply did the work for you!
One of the most unique ways to use the R-F-T M216 Matrix is in "dual mono" mode, which can lead to all kinds of interesting textures for vocals. By running the outputs into two different microphone pre-amplifiers, the user can now have one capsule set up to sound its best on quiet passages in a vocal and the other for louder passages.
If the user runs about 10db more gain on the microphone pre-amplifier for the capsule that is set up to record quiet passages, then both outputs can be recorded separately and blended later; or a compression device can be used on the pre-amplifier that is set up for the quieter passages which will net about 12-15db of gain reduction as the singer gets louder. These two outputs can be summed and the resulting signal will maintain a relatively constant level while being automatically combined for optimal capture the performance.
Each R-F-T M216 Matrix microphone is supplied with a custom Gotham Audio Cable, wooden mic box, 916 MATRIX Power Supply with remote polar pattern selector, MATRIX and Z40 Encoder, and when registered, a 4-Year fully transferable Limited Warranty.

10 years subsequent to the release of the ubiquitous U-47, the U-48 was released with one variation to the U-47; it had "bi-directional" (figure 8) capability. While the head assembly from a U-47 can be fitted to a U-48 amplifier, the same does not work in reverse.
According to the book Recording The Beatles, the
Telefunken U-48
was one of George Martin's favorite microphones when actually "recording the Beatles". The bi-directional capability can be very useful in more "ambient" recording environments where the engineer recording the sound does not want hear as much of the room ambience as might be recorded with an omni-directional or cardioid pick-up pattern.
A microphone's capsule is often made of two sides. The front diaphragm will produce a cardioid response, as will the rear. When the two diaphragms are polarized in the same polarity an "omni-directional" effect is achieved. When they are polarized in opposite polarity a figure 8 pattern is created.
This is not an acoustic pattern creation; it is an electronic pattern creation. All microphone capsules are omni-directional in the low frequency regions of their response. As you climb the frequency spectrum the capsule will have a more directional response.
When you have two identical diaphragms with identical voltage to those diaphragms you will have a smooth "omni-directional" response. When those voltages are reversed, an electronic cancellation of common information is achieved; the result is two "lobes", one on the front of the microphone, one on the rear of the microphone, with full frequency cancellation through the frequency range achieved through electronic cancellation.

Since its original development in 1946, the
Telefunken U 47
has been the microphone of choice for generations of recording professionals. The first condenser microphone to offer selectable polar patterns (cardioid and omni), the original U-47 also featured the famous M7 capsule which had been developed in 1928 by Georg Neumann. To this capsule was added an amplifier built from military surplus VF-14 tubes (they had been used in field and aircraft radios), and BV8 output transformer. The combination of these components created a sonic quality that was absolutely unheard of in the English speaking world of the mid-1940s when darker sounding, less detailed ribbon microphones were the standard. The introduction of the U-47 brought a new level of fidelity to the audio world, and is still considered to be one of the finest microphones ever produced.
Upon first glance of the new U-47 from Telefunken Elektroakustik, it's easy to see the "family resemblance." The large, chrome head grille houses our newly manufactured M7 capsule. Its matte nickel finished body houses a new BV8 output transformer and our new VF-14k vacuum tube; a "plug and play" replacement for the rare VF-14M tubes found in the original. The classic "Telefunken" diamond logo proudly adorns the front of the body tube. All of these accoutrements show that this microphone means business.
Whether you're recording a symphony, a "crooner," or any facet of modern music, you'll find a great tool in the U-47. Its authoritative mid-range and extended low-end response dance from your ears . . . much as a vintage wine dances from the palate. Everything, from vocals to the loudest of guitar sounds, full on orchestral recording, beautiful backing vocal arrangements, or a chamber ensemble will benefit wildly from the rich and vibrant tone of this stunning microphone.
Find out why engineers, producers, and artists all over the globe have made the new U-47 from Telefunken Elektroakustik their go-to microphone.
