Latin Grammy Award Winning producer Armando Avila, a Vintage King client, was gracious enough to share with us some of his favorite pieces of gear. Armando has worked with RBD, Aleks Syntek, La 5a. Estacion, Belinda, Allison, Moderatto, Gloria Trevi, Natalia Lafourcade, Alejandra Guzman, OV7 and many others. Enjoy!
Armando's Favorite Gear
- 1970's Black Face 1176LN: as everyone, I love it on Bass, vocals, mono drum mic, etc, etc.
- STA-Level (RETRO): For me it shines on Bass, drum aux and of course on vocals (my favorite right now with its fast release mod).
- AMS RMX 16: I love it on drums (especially on Snare) and some times the ambience patch works great on vocals and acoustic guitars.
- Gefell UM900: sounds great on everything.
- LA3A: I always have a pair patched on my acoustic guitar tracks
- Vintage Neve 1073: What can I say?
- A Pair of Roland SDE3000: hard panned L & R, they sound great on vocals.
- EQP1a: Mine is always attached to my main vocal track, some times even without eq at all.
- EDAX MEQ5-e: beautiful on clean and distorted electric guitars.
- SDD3000: always between my vintage Strat and my Vox AC30 (As used by The Edge!).
- Eventide H3000: I have H910, H949, and Eclipse, but for vocals widening nothing can touch the H3000 (Dual 910 patch!!)
- Ibanez SDR 3000: Great ping-pong slap delays and some times its gate reverb blends nice on snare.
- Roland DC30 Analogue delay: I grew up listening to this effect on my father's music, it was hard for me to find it again, and when I was able to buy it, it was worth all the research over the world to get.
- Inward Connections Vac Rac TSL-3 Stereo Limiter: I got my TSL 3 after reading about it in some Audio forums, then I asked Mike Nehra about it and he sent me the first one. After listening to my vocal tracks, acoustic and electric guitars through it, I immediately ordered a second TSL 3, because the first one is now busy with my main vocal tracks, so I desperately need another one for my electric guitars, and now that I think about it, I need a 3rd one because nothing sounds like a Vac Rac on acoustic guitars too!! I have some of the finest compressors and limiters and this is by far one of my favorites, I can't replicate what it does with any other device.
