"You have to stop getting such nice mikes. I just don't make enough money to purchase them all!"

Korby Kat4 SystemDear Mike Nehra/Vintage King Audio:

It's been a while since I've been in contact with you, but I thought you might enjoy the MP3 file I've attached here. This is a recording of St. Louis guitarist, John McClellan performing Don McLean's "Vincent." I recorded John in Studio A at Webster University, St. Louis, where I head the 4-year undergraduate program in Audio Production. The mikes I used were the Korby KAT4 you sold me and a Sennheiser MKH30 bidirectional in an M/S stereo pair. The Korby head I chose was the very sweet modified U67 in cardioid.

I think the recording turned out pretty well. This recording will be part of a tribute CD John is doing in memory of the late Chet Atkins, who also played this tune. In fact, John is quite close to the Atkins family and is playing Chet's guitar here. That's why the bass is a little heavy. The rest of the CD is being done in Nashville with Vince Gill, Boots Randolph and singer Eddy Arnold. This version of "Vincent" will also be part of a compilation CD out soon with an upcoming issue of "Fingerstyle Guitar" magazine.

This past Christmas, I used the Korby KAT4 to record a concert by the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus. This time I chose the C12 head as the "M" in an M/S pair, again with the Sennheiser bidirectional. This pair was flanked by a pair of B&K 4006s wearing 50mm spheres. The KAT4 sounded stellar and put the B&Ks to shame. So much so, that when I got back home, I used a program, "Firium," to capture the EQ curve of the Korby C12 and then superimposed it on the B&Ks to make them sound better! In short, the C12 had a nicer high end and a better defined low end.

Now, each time I visit your site, I am torn! Another KAT 4?? The AKG C24 modified by Klaus Heyne (SN 001) or the pair of C12s that will be coming to you soon. You have to stop getting such nice mikes. I just don't make enough money to purchase them all!

Best regards,

Barry
