Hi, my name is Michael Brauer and I have G.A.S.* (I will not seek help because I like the way it makes me feel). The severity of my G.A.S. is dependent upon what I have in the piggy bank.
I love to search for old toys. The hunt is as much fun as the capture! Some vintage stuff is so rare, it takes years to find. I'm in no rush, I don't miss something I don't have. I don't acquire them as a trophy. I get them because they help me get the sound I'm looking for in a mix. If I don't use a piece of gear on a regular basis, I get rid of it. I get sounds in my head (not the devil or ringing type) and I usually have the toy to express it with. If I don't, the sound grows in my head and I can't stop thinking about it. So I look and I look until I find something that sounds like what's in my little head and then I feel good for a while and then it starts all over again. I did try to stop about two years ago, for three months. I felt like the collection was complete and my assistant assured me, in fact begged me to stop the insanity. I tried it for three months but that good ol' feeling came back, so I got rid of him and got me a brand spankin' new assistant and a second assistant to make me a custom set of recall sheets that made life good again...for a while.
My first assignment as the new editor and chief of "Brauer's Corner" is to provide my boss Mr. Nehra with a selection of my Ten favorite pieces of gear I just can't do without. Yah right! I quit. How is that possible? I own about 115 toys and I have to pick just ten!? The only way I can condense them down is to think of what I'd need if I walked into a studio to mix a song without my Soundtowers racks. With that in mind, I'll start from ten and work my way up to the big one.
Michael Brauer has mixed such records as the Stones' Steelwheels , New Radicals, Tony Bennett's Grammy Album of the Year Unplugged , and ColdPlay's Grammy Alternative Album of the year Parachutes . Recent projects include Paul McCartney's Live Back in the USA , Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue, My Morning Jacket and John Mayer's "Continuum" (2007 TEC Award winner for Record/Production Album).
